What is Death By Cannabis (and Who TF is Steve Stacey)?

The two top-selling cannabis cultivars grown at I-Deal Cannabis Co. (the fictional Canadian Licensed Producer where the novel Death By Cannabis is set) tell it all.

The flagship Sativa is Sour Poison (a cross of Sour Diesel and Durban Poison).

IDC’s primo Indica is Death Breath, an in-house cross of Death Bubba and Mendo Breath.

If those strain names didn’t give away the novel’s parodic theme – juxtaposing the best thing in the world (cannabis) with the worst thing in the world (death) – consider the other killer cultivars mentioned in the book.

Want a little Trainwreck? How about a hit from this AK-47?

Cannabis is typically viewed as a harmless recreation, as reflected by the opening epigraph of Death By Cannabis:

In Death By Cannabis, weed is the touchpoint for an entire collection of different stories told using different genres.

In one story cannabis cures. In another it kills.

Romance complicates. Neighbours are pitted against one another. The loyalty of friends is tested.

A horse destroys a car. The human rights of a forest gnome are explored.

The ultimate question Death By Cannabis asks its readers is, “How can cannabis be so good, in a world where so much is so bad?”

Cannabis Legalization In Canada: Five years in (and no bodies piling up yet!)

Death By Cannabis also serves as a snapshot of the Canadian legalized cannabis industry five years into its history.

Public Health saw legalization as an opportunity for accurate dosing of safety tested products. Protecting children through packaging and marketing regulations was another goal.

Meanwhile, law and policing saw legalization as a way to take cannabis out of the hands of criminals (with rigid security protocols for LPs).

Growers have explored new innovations in well-financed cultivation facilities, where next-level genetics have been developed via semi-accurate lab testing.

CEOs and founders all work from home now.

And Steve Stacey has been participating in the industry and observing its dynamics since legalization Day One.

Steve Stacey: The pothead responsible for DBC

Steve Stacey is a writer of fiction and a Brand Ambassador in the Canadian legal cannabis industry.

Here is the bio from Steve’s Goodreads author page:

Previous to working in the Canadian legal cannabis industry (first in Production and then in Marketing) Steve worked as a full-time freelance writer for sixteen years. The Death By Cannabis project (sequel forthcoming in 2024) brings together cannabis, writing, and his third passion: Augmented Reality (AR). Death By Cannabis is punctuated by print-based Augmented Reality experiences in every chapter with no app download required. The innovations in cannabis production are paralleled by the stylistic, technical, and technological innovations in his fiction in ways every stoner – and many non-stoners – will love.

Steve loves weed, loves writing, and loves blowing readers’ stoned minds with Augmented Reality (check out the blog post all about the book’s groundbreaking adventures in AR).
